Introduction
Teshikaga is located in the northern area of the Kushiro district in Akan National Park in Hokkaido.It is a caldera - shaped wild nature preserve. The town is divided into three areas: Mashu, Kawayu Onsen, and Kussharo. In each area, you will find Lake Mashu - worldfamous for its clear water, Mt. Io - an
active volcano, and breathtaking viewsof Lake Kussharo from surrounding passes and hilltops.
Kawayu Onsen, a well-known hot spring in the town, offers great quality of water flowing directly from a hot spring source. We are proud of the 100% fontal water used at all hot spring facilities.
There are four JR train stations in the town, Minami Teshikaga, Mashu, Biruwa and KawayuOnsen. Local buses are available from the bus terminal in Mashu and Kawayu Onsen area.

Meaning of TESHIKAGA
“Teshika” means “rockyground” and “ga” means “place” in Ainu language. Their settlement was once made at the rocky spot near the Kushiro Riverand they named the area “Teshikaga”.Today, a public bathhouse is built on that spot.

Surrounded by steep mountains, with the Abashiri district to the North-west, The Nemuro highland to the East, Shibecha, and the Kushiro Marsh to the South.


Topography
Kushiro River runs through the center of the town from Lake Kussharo which is part of the Chishima Volcano Belt. The town is built at the foot of the mountain near Lake Mashu. The highland is very hilly and dry. Seventy percent of the area is covered by the primeval forest. Dairy farming and farming are spread along Lake Kussharo and the Kushiro River. Main products are milk, potatoes, sugar beets, wheat andbuckwheat.


Climate
Average temperature in summers is between 16℃and28℃ and in winter is between -10℃ and -6.3℃.

Usually, the first snowfall is in early November. It snows 50 to 100 mm less than other area in Hokkaido and, there are more sunny days in winter compare to western Hokkaido.
